Sustainability has become a constant topic worldwide, where the financial market plays an important role in the transition to a sustainable future. Previous studies have focused on the financial perspective where returns from sustainable and conventional funds were examined. On the other hand, a knowledge gap has been identified as less attention has been paid to the effects that sustainable investment strategies can have on sustainability risks in equity funds. There is only one previous European research that has examined this relationship, however there is a lack of research on the Swedish asset management market. This study therefore aims to investigate the relationship between sustainable investment strategies and ESG among Swedish-registered equity funds. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a research question was formulated and to answer it, six hypotheses based on the previous research have been designed and tested. In addition, the study's research method has been inspired by previous research and a deductive quantitative research method has been applied. To examine the relationship, the mean value between the variables ESG and investment strategies based on 141 Swedish-registered equity funds has been studied, and significant differences between these have been detected. The results showed that there were almost no differences between the variables, however the mean value showed that implementation of sustainable investment strategies affects ESG risks. The results confirm that there is a relationship, however it varies whether investment strategies increase or decrease the risks in funds. Therefore, it matters which investment strategy the asset manager applies. The study contributes to the asset management industry as asset managers can benefit from the information on the impact of investment strategies on sustainability risks and which strategies and combinations of strategies are appropriate for each ESG risk.
