Over the past decade, sustainable business has become increasingly important where companies are measured via ESG ratings. The sustainability work with ESG as a measuring instrument aims to measure companies on three aspects that are environmental (E), social (S) and corporate governance related (G). Discussions about how companies have worked to contribute to long-term profitability and to manage future sustainability risks have become increasingly important. The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact on a company's capital structure by its ESG-score given that there are institutional differences between the US and Sweden that can be linked to corporate financing and laws regarding sustainability work. Based on the purpose, the research question was formulated. To answer this, theories linked to capital structure and corporate finance have been included, as well as previous research linking sustainable business. The study consisted of 257 listed companies on the US and Swedish stock exchanges. The results cannot prove that there is a significant relationship between capital structure and ESG-score.
