Abstract

Background: Young adults’ experiences of living with type 1 diabetes are
important for nurses to be able to provide personalized care. Person-centered care
and involvement strengthen the patient's autonomy and makes it possible to create
support based on their needs and life situation. A smooth transition between
pediatric and adult healthcare, as well as access to modern aids, is crucial for
promoting self-care and quality of life. Purpose: The aim was to shed light on how
young adults with type 1 diabetes experience person-centered care. Method: A
general literature review based on 11 qualitative articles, with searches conducted
in two databases, Cinahl Complete and PubMed. The articles were reviewed using
the HKR review template for qualitative studies. The analysis was carried out
according to Friberg’s four-step model. Results: The analysis resulted in one main
category: Being supported and having control, and four subcategories: Being
involved, Continuity in care, Openness and clarity in communication, Feeling seen.
Discussion: The method is discussed based on Shenton's concepts of credibility,
dependability, transferability, and confirmability. The discussion of the results is
based on the categories identified in the findings and is discussed in relation to the
experience of person-centred care, with connections made to Ekman’s model for
person-centred care.
