Background: Mental illness is the most common reason for sick leave and four out of ten people with mental illness have experienced poor attitudes in the healthcare system. The attitudes from the nurse in the case of mental illness is of great importance to the patient. By person-centred care, the nurse's attitude can lead to faster recovery. Aim: The study aimed to highlight patients' experiences of nurses' attitudes of mental illness in health care. Method: A general literature review based on 11 qualitative articles, which were reviewed using HKR's review template and analyzed with Friberg's analysis method. The analysis found two main categories and five subcategories. Results: One of the main categories of the result; Providing reassuring care contains the patients' experience of safety. Its subcategories show the importance of a present attitude, how the attitude is experienced professionally when the nurse can provide information and that the nurse's attitude encourages self-care. The second main category; A trusting relationship contains the patients' experience of the nurse's ability to build relationships with the patients through their attitudes. Its subcategories show the experience of the nurse's approach and the importance of being seen for who you are. Discussion: Two findings are discussed; the support required from the nurse for the patients to believe in their own recovery and the importance of being listened to as a patient with mental illness. These findings are discussed from McCormack and McCance's person-centred framework from a societal- and healthcare perspective. Conclusion: This study presents the patients' experiences of how the nurse's attitudes create security, contributes to faster recovery and encourages self-care. This study can be good for the nurse's reflection and awareness of how patients with mental illness experience their care.
