Abstract

Background: During 2023, 523 kidney transplants were performed in Sweden, despite the number of performed transplants, there are still many people who die because of their kidney disease and the long waiting list. Patients are characterized by an everyday life of hospital visits and dialysis treatment. The study contributes to an increased understanding of the patients who are on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. Aim: To describe patients' experiences while waiting for a kidney transplant. Method: A general literature review with studies based on a qualitative approach was applied. The search was carried out in two databases, Cinahl Complete and PubMed. The search result resulted in twelve scientific articles. The analysis of articles was done using an inductive method. Results: Three main categories emerged: Waiting and expectation, Experiences of guilt and Support from the surroundings. Based on the main categories, seven subcategories were then identified: A long wait that creates both hope and despair, Longing for freedom and a normal everyday life. Guilt to the surroundings, Guilt to the donor. The support from the nurse, The support from the close relatives and The spiritual. Discussion: The quality of the study has been discussed based on Shenton's the concept of trustworthiness: credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability. Two central findings were discussed in the results discussion. The findings are: the social support, strategies for staying on the waiting list. The findings were discussed from an ethical and societal perspective as well as from Ekman's description of person-centered care and Antonovsky's description of KASAM. Conclusion: The need for support while waiting for a kidney transplant was great. What the support looked like was described as individual, some patients described the nurse and the social support as the driving force. Others felt instead that the support came from the spiritual.
