Abstract

A comparative study between Serbia's and Sweden's school documents, where the focus is on examining how both countries see individualized teaching. The work is above all a qualitative text analysis, but a qualitative observation has been carried out to show typical classroom situations in the two countries. I study follows a mapping of previous research that shows that there are knowledge gaps in the field. To make it easier for the reader, the theoretical part has been structured based on a community and school level. The level of society is based on Anthony Gidden's explanation regarding modern society and Zygmunt Bauman's explanation regarding late modern society. The school level provides an explanation of Michel Foucault's concept of power, Lev Vygotskij regarding the socio-cultural perspective and Jonas Aspelin's explanation of the relational perspective.
In the results and analysis part, an interpretation is made of the two countries' school documents and the observation occasions that show that in Serbia teachers have a position of power containing trust and confidence from the students. An examination of the curriculum in Serbia shows how the individual's freedom and rights are important. However, not to the same extent as in the Swedish one.
