Abstract
In recent years, interactive film has once again become a popular area in informatics research. The term itself is conflict-ridden, and means concrete, active relationship (Miller, 2019) with an entertainment medium aimed at relaxation (Heck et al., 2021). The conflicting meaning of the term has resulted in ambiguous interactions and poor user engagement. In this study, an interaction is designed through concept-driven design research to investigate how the balance between active interaction and passive observation can be created and thus create a good user engagement. By studying informants' interaction with interactive film on different levels and literature, movements, habits and behaviors are identified. In addition, three requirements were defined: simple interaction that can be performed without further thought and with minimal movements, the choices should give a reasonable understanding of their outcome, the interactions must not make the user feel that they have made mistakes, these gave the concept a solid foundation. The concept was designed in different ways to create a relationship between the devices, the user and the actual interaction. Furthermore, the interaction was analyzed and how well it met these requirements with the help of new informants. The result indicated that the interaction met all the requirements in one way or another manifested that this is an example of how interactive film, interactions can be designed to maintain good user engagement but offer a more relaxed context.
