Abstract

Background: Nurses in home healthcare collaborate with many different professions both within and outside their own organization. Collaboration plays an important role in care outcomes and is influenced by many different factors. In line with an ageing population and increased care needs in the home, higher demands are placed on functioning collaboration between healthcare actors. Aim: The aim of the study was to synthesize research on nurses’ experiences of interprofessional collaboration in home healthcare and residential care facilities. Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative systematic literature review. Literature searches were performed in CINAHL and PubMed and structured using the SPICE model. Thirteen qualitative articles were included in the study. The analysis was conducted using thematic analysis. Results: Three analytical themes were identified: structural conditions shape the conditions for collaboration, nurses maintain collaboration through a coordinating responsibility, and relational and hierarchical dimensions shape the scope for action. The interpretation of these analytical themes was based on seven descriptive. Conclusion: Interprofessional collaboration is influenced by deficiencies in organizational structures, communication and mutual understanding between professions, which risks leading to fragmented care. From a societal perspective, insufficient collaboration may also affect the efficiency of healthcare resources and the possibility of providing equal care. The specialist nurse in the care of older adults can, through their advanced competence and coordinating function, contribute to strengthening collaboration and creating more integrated care.
