    Abstract

For a long time, I have had an interest in Islam in Iran. To be able to learn more and understand this subject, I will analyze the novel Het huis van der moskee (The House by the Mosque, my translation) by Kader Abdolah, which takes place in Iran during the time of the Islamic revolution of 1978-79. I will study the importance of religion to a few of the characters, and how this changes during the course of the revolution. To do this, I will begin by studying the varying functions of religion, as well as the religious and political history of Iran. In the analysis I will discuss three characters who represent three different approaches to religion: inner spirituality, religion as a way towards acceptance and violent religious oppression.
