The present study has been conducted with the aim of contributing to an understanding of how active teachers in school-age educare perceive and interpret their professional role and what the professional role looks like. The theoretical perspective that the study has applied is phenomenography and through semi-structured interviews as a method, empiricism has been collected. The empiricism has then been analyzed in accordance with a phenomenographic analysis model that includes seven steps and thus resulted in qualitatively different perceptions of the professional role. The main results of the present study show that the teachers in school-age educare who serve in primary school perceive that they have a dual mission that generates a complex professional role. Furthermore, it can be seen that the principal is usually not as familiar with the school-age educare as in the primary school. The results also show that the cooperation between the school and the school-age educare is perceived as deficient and as a one-way street. The conclusion of the present study is thus
that the professional role of a teacher in school-age educare generally includes a dual mission that is challenging to maintain without adequate conditions. Furthermore, the study establishes that the professional role involves a complexity that affects the professional practice of the teacher in school-age educare. The title of the study is a quote selected from the results. The quote has been chosen as the title because it is a clear example of the complexity that emerges in the study.
