In the present case study, a selected leisure center has been investigated from a language development perspective. Language and communication are areas that the School Inspectorate identified in 2018 as deficient in the after school centers, and is therefor relevant to investigate. Based on socio-cultural theory, the study has investigated how staff in the after-school center enable the linguistic learning environment in the activity, that is, how the students are challenged and supported to develop and deepen their language skills within the framework of the after school center's activities. Through observations that observed interaction between staff and students, as well as a group interview with the after school center's current work team, the research questions have been answered. Through awareness, the work team has created a clear structure to take advantage of language development opportunities in the form of, among other things, didactic activities during snacktime. Nevertheless, the results have shown that in interaction with the students, awareness is required in how the staff use the language as well as keeping conversations that deepen thinking and dialogues.
