Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate teachers in the leisure centers stories about how they work with language development in their teaching in the leisure center. The data for the study was collected through semi-structured interviews including a pilot interview where four after-school teachers were interviewed from different activities. The interviewees had worked in the leisure center activities for different lengths of time and had completed the education for teachers in the leisure centers in different years. The informants told us that they all worked with language development, but in our results section it turned out that some of the activities worked more actively with it than others. Some of them worked on it through similar themes such as focus on vocabulary, reading and the way it was carried out, while others had other approaches and other areas of the subject. The results of the survey are presented based on three areas, namely digital tools, environments and didactic activities. The analysis of the collected empirical data is based on the didactic theory. A conclusion drawn in this study is that teachers in the leisure centers have difficulty reflecting on why they choose certain working methods over others.
