This study examined how screen usage during meals affects eating habits, meal experiences, and social interactions among adults. To investigate this, a survey study was conducted with 131 participants, analysing various aspects of their screen usage during meals, including frequency and type of food choices, as well as their social and mindful eating behaviours. The study focuses on the use of screens such as smartphones, computers, and TVs during meals and explored the impact on both eating behaviours concerning mindful eating and the social context. The results show that screen usage during meals often leads to less mindful eating, faster and less healthy food choices, and decreased awareness of food quality and quantity. This can result in overeating and unhealthy eating habits. Socially, screens reduce interaction during meals, which diminishes enjoyment and engagement. However, the study also shows that screens can serve as a companion for those eating alone, thereby enhancing the meal experience. The study noted generational differences, with Millennials and Generation Z using screens the most during meals, while older generations like Baby Boomers used them less. Screens can both enhance and detract from the meal experience, offering entertainment but also distracting from the food. The conclusion is that screens can have both positive and negative effects on the meal experience, eating behaviours, and social interactions, which requires a conscious approach to screen use in an increasingly connected world.
