The aim of this study is to investigate how motor skills and sensory skills can influence communicative cooperation in students at non-verbal communication level with intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities. Based on theories about communicative cooperation and motor and sensory skills, we chose a specific form of music therapy; Functionally Oriented Music Therapy (FMT). The research questions are based on whether FMT can influence communicative cooperation and in what way FMT can be a tool for strengthening communication cooperation for pupils in Compulsory School for Children with Intellectual Disabilities. The study is a case study, and the empirical data is collected through observations of one student in Compulsory School for Children with Disabilities. The observations consist of five individual FMT sessions and two classroom activities. The data analysis is qualitatively analysed from a socio-cultural perspective. The results indicate a certain influence of FMT in communicative cooperation along with the fact that this cooperation might be transferable to other contexts. The results also show that FMT could provide valuable knowledge to educators to promote communication development teaching in Compulsory School for Children with Intellectual Disabilities. The idea is that this study can provide a knowledge contribution in an otherwise sparsely explored area.
