Since domestic violence is a public health problem, society has a great responsibility to prevent violence in order to counteract violence in close relationships on several levels. Research shows that the competence of professionals who in their work risk encountering individuals exposed to violence increases the chances of early detection of domestic violence, which can lead to an increase in the health and well-being of individuals. The purpose of the study was to investigate how employees within the health and social care administration in Oxelösund municipality, perceived the development of violence prevention work in domestic violence, including the introductory course from the National Center for Women's Freedom. A qualitative method was used for the study and included eight employees who participated in the introductory course. A strategic selection was applied and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The collected material was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis and resulted in three main categories and six subcategories. The results concerned the challenges and opportunities that the employees experienced in the development of violence prevention work, linked to domestic violence. The results highlighted, competence among employees, as the main key to early detection and being able to provide support to individuals exposed to violence. The results also illustrated the challenge regarding the transformation of theoretical knowledge into practical competence. The conclusion highlighted a need for further research on earlier detection and being able to provide support to individuals exposed to domestic violence. Public health work could transform this theoretical knowledge into practical competence, which could increase the conditions for improving the health and well-being of individuals exposed to violence, but also optimize public health.
