Background: Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer for women. One type of breast surgery that can cure breast cancer is mastectomy. During a mastectomy, part or the whole breast is removed, which can change women's body image. Aim: The aim of the literature review was to describe women's experience of changed body image after breast cancer mastectomy. Method: A literature review based on qualitative articles. The working method followed Polit and Beck's flow chart and the analysis method followed Friberg's five-step model. Results: The result is based on 13 qualitative articles. The analysis resulted in three main categories and described the experience of a changed body, experiences regarding sexuality and femininity. Discussion: The method discussion was based on Shenton's criteria for ensuring trustworthiness. The result discussion is based on three findings and is discussed based on Eriksson's theory of suffering, ICN's code of ethics for nurses and societal perspective. The literature review can contribute to a person-centered approach in nurses through increased knowledge about alleviating suffering in women after mastectomy.
