Abstract

Background: Breast Cancer (BC) is the most common tumor disease among women in the western world. BC diagnosis is often shocking for the woman, which presupposes that the nurse has patience and understanding for women's situation. BC treatment affects women in different dimensions. Not least psychological factors where depression, anxiety and impact on cohabitation are common. The nurse annually cares for a large number of women with BC which can lead to being seen as one among other patients being treated for cancer rather than an individual with special needs for support and care. Aim and objectives: Women's need for support from the nurse during treatment of breast cancer. Methods: A qualitative literature study based on 12 qualitative original articles. Systematic data collection has been carried out in the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. Blomquist´s et al. (2016) review template was applied during the review process. Data were analyzed by the authors individually. Results: Themes were identified which highlights women's need for support; To have an available nurse when needed; Receive information and knowledge improves women's experience of support and Being treated as an individual rather than an illness. Conclusion: BC entails demands on the nursing care since women regardless of origin, suffer to a large extent both mentally and physically from BC. Women have a need for individualized support that the nurse should relate to both before and after treatment. Continuity and accessibility were considered significant for the women to reduce loneliness, provide security and contribute to self-determination.
