This study aims to investigate the obstacles and challenges faced by teachers in sexuality health education in elementary school grades 4-6. Previous research has not specifically addressed this topic within the Swedish context, which forms the focus of this study. The theoretical framework is based on a combination of phenomenography and frame factor theory. To examine the research question, a qualitative approach was used with semi-structured interviews with six teachers. The interviews identified three frame factors that influence sexuality health education: pedagogical frameworks, administrative- and resource-related frameworks, and frameworks based on students and their cultural backgrounds. The results indicate that teachers face challenges such as the lack of clear guidelines regarding the curriculum and a lack of education within sexuality, consent, and relationships. This leads to several difficult aspects of teaching, such as social media and pornography. Additionally, there is a lack of support and resources in the form of collegial collaboration and adequate teaching materials. Teachers also find it challenging to plan teaching content due to the varying maturity levels of students. Finally, the results highlight challenges related to the diversity of students' cultural backgrounds, which affects the teaching context. One conclusion of this study is that many of the identified challenges are interrelated and could potentially be prevented through increased subject-specific training for teachers in schools.
