Abstract
Greenery and water, green-blue structures, are fundamental to a sustainable city. Well-planned, they create an ecological infrastructure that benefits biodiversity, generates resilient ecosystems and provides ecosystem services. They contribute to climate adaptation through nature-based solutions and forms environments that promotes public health and well-being. Swedish municipalities are responsible for planning, utilizing, and managing land sustainably. In 2018, interim environmental goals were set, for the integration of greenery and ecosystem services into urban environments.But increasing population leads to larger cities and risk of prioritizing development and growth over green-blue areas. The purpose of this study is to examine and identify the integration of urban greenery, ecosystem services and nature-based measures for climate adaptation in comprehensive planning. To answer the study's research, a qualitative content analysis of recently adopted comprehensive plans was conducted.
The results show both progress and challenges in the integration of ecosystem services. The municipalities express understanding and knowledge of the value of green-blue structures for sustainable urban development, and the concept is mostly explicitly expressed. The municipalities long-term goals indicate a strive for sustainable living environments, where green-blue structures and their benefits play a significant role in the development. Instrumentally, ecosystem services are mostly integrated implicitly, with maps illustrating recreational space and ecological corridors. Nature-based solutions for urban climate adaptation are not as well established in the comprehensive plans.
The predominant focus is on the value of green-blue structures for recreation and public health. Planning, knowledge, and collaboration are essential for creating well-functioning multifunctional urban green-blue areas.
