Abstract

This study examines how school segregation affects students’ academic performance and how civics education can function as a compensatory tool in socioeconomically disadvantaged school environments. Through qualitative interviews with five civics teachers from two schools in different socioeconomic areas, the study analyzes how teachers perceive and address students’ unequal conditions. The findings show that segregation affects access to social and cultural capital, which in turn influences students' trust in school and their academic achievement. School choice and residential segregation emerge as key factors that reinforce these inequalities. Despite these challenges, the teachers express a strong belief in the potential of civics education to strengthen students' participation, future outlook, and civic engagement through relational teaching and critical thinking.
