Abstract

Background: Violence in close relationships against women is a frequent problem in Sweden as well as in the world. Nurses can meet abused women in care regardless of whether they seek care for their injuries in relation to the violence or for another reason. Nurses have a significant role in detecting and working against intimate partner violence. By knowledge about nurses' experiences and perceptions of the meeting with women exposed to violence, needs of improvement can be identified. Purpose: The purpose was to illustrate the nurses' experiences and perceptions of encountering women who have been exposed to intimate partner violence within outpatient care. Method: The method used was a literature study with a qualitative approach where 10 qualitative articles have been reviewed and used. Results: The result of the analysis was three categories; Feeling a lack of knowledge and uncertainty in the meeting, Having experience strengthens the feeling of security in the encounter , and Having organizational resources is important for the encounter. Discussion: The methodological discussion is based on the concept of trustworthiness, consisting of aspects of credibility, transferability, reliability and confirmability. The discussion of the result is based on three findings: Uncertainty, experience and security, and finally inadequacy. All with relevance in nursing and ethics as well as social relevance. Lack of knowledge, time, and resources indicated that nurses felt an insecurity and inadequacy when encountering the abused women. At the same time, having more experience in the area of intimate partner violence, indicated a certain sense of security among the nurses. The security can reduce the risk of sick leave among nurses, which is favorable from a societal perspective.
