Abstract

The common meal is important for social community, health and well-being and can be considered the preferred form of eating. People with intellectual disabilities often have poorer eating habits and lower physical activity as well as weight disorders to a greater extent than the rest of the population. The aim was to investigate how the staff at group homes within LSS work with challenges and opportunities with the participants during the cooking together. The study was performed in two group homes in Skåne, Sweden. Three focus groups with 2-3 participants were held and then observations were made. The result identified several possibilities and challenges. The opportunities with cooking together were the community that was created. In addition, the cooking became an opportunity for independent development. It also contributed to strengthened self-esteem and self-confidence. The challenges associated with cooking together were to motivate the participants to want to participate. There were also challenges linked to a lack of time and a concern that "chaos" would arise. This study has generated the result that the participants can be involved in cooking together with the carer, however this needs to be adapted to each individual's ability. The staff regarded themselves as self-taught in the food and meal area, stating that their own interest largely governed the extent to which the food was cooked together. The conclusion that can be drawn from this work is that cooking together is positive but challenging.
