: En allmän litteraturöversikt om vuxna patienters upplevelser av sjuksköterskors bemötande inom psykiatrisk slutenvård

Abstract

Background: Psychiatric inpatient care is a care context in which patients are often in a vulnerable life situation, and where nurses’ approach to care is of great importance for nursing practice, the therapeutic relationship, and patients’ experiences of safety, participation, and dignity. Aim: The aim was to illuminate adult patients’ experiences of nurses’ approach within psychiatric inpatient care. Method: The study was conducted as an integrative review of qualitative research inspired by meta-synthesis. Scientific articles were searched in CINAHL Complete, PsycINFO, and PubMed. Nine qualitative articles were included and analyzed according to Friberg’s five-step analysis. Results: The analysis yielded five categories encompassing: The importance of an empathic approach, the significance of availability and supportive presence, the importance of respectful and dignified approach, the desire to be treated as an equal and the significance of flexible boundary-setting. The results demonstrated that empathy, responsiveness, respect, clear communication, and availability strengthen patients’ trust, sense of safety, and participation. Conversely, authoritarian attitudes, lack of empathy, unavailability, and the exercise of power contributed to feelings of insecurity, powerlessness, and reduced autonomy. Discussion: The credibility of the literature review is discussed based on Shenton’s four quality criteria. Two findings are discussed in the results discussion: availability and supportive presence, and authority versus equality, in relation to Barker’s Tidal Model. Conclusion: A person-centered approach characterized by empathy, respect, and equality is essential for good nursing care within psychiatric inpatient care.
