Abstract

Motivation is a force that exists within us and that drives us towards our different goals and needs. In the school world, this driving force is one of the most important factors for students to achieve expectations and goals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between motivation and school performance among Swedish high school students. A sample of 162 students at a medium-sized school in southern Sweden has answered a questionnaire consisting of self-assessment scales that measure intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation (Lepper et al., 2005) consisting of three aspects of each type of motivation and state an average grade from the most recent school year grade. A correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between all aspects of intrinsic motivation and school performance, as well as a positive relationship between one of the aspects of extrinsic motivation and school performance. A multiple regression was made to predict school performance based on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, ethnicity and parents' level of education where only intrinsic motivation was found to predict school performance, the other variables had no effect. In summary, it is stated that intrinsic motivation could be an important factor that can affect school performance, although in this study I cannot address causation with full certainty, and it should be in the interest of both teachers and guardians to also know what contributes to intrinsic motivation in order for children and adolescents to feel motivated in their education.
