Abstract

Background: A child passes away every five minutes as a result of child abuse worldwide. Child abuse is illegal in 55 countries throughout the world. The nurses that are included in this study are obligated to report suspected child abuse, except for those in Iran. Nursing care is the area of expertise for nurses. As a nurse, it’s important to recognize the signs of child abuse, such as physical, psychological and sexual. The signs can be seen on the parents as well as the child. Aim: The aim of the study was to research why nurses would not file a report of concern, despite suspicions of child abuse. Method: A literary study based on qualitative scientific articles. The researches were made in three different databases and Kristantad university’s review template was used. Friberg’s three step model (2012) was used during the analysis process. Findings: Four different main categories were found as reasons why nurses did not file reports of concern when suspecting child abuse; fear, lack of knowledge and experience, lack of support and the last one was about keeping the family safe. Discussion: The method was discussed based on Shenton’s (2004) four strategies to ensure trustworthiness. Three findings from the result were discussed based on McCormack & McCances (2010) theory, Person-centred care. The findings were about insecurities, support from authorities and about laws and guidelines for child abuse.
