Background: The increasing proportion of older adults in society leads to a greater need for nursing care, particularly within municipal primary healthcare. Nurses have a central role, where the encounter with the older person is an important part of nursing care. This encounter is influenced by several factors that are significant for how care is experienced. At the same time, the experiences of older adults risk not always being taken into account, highlighting the need to emphasize their perspective Aim: To describe how older persons experience encounters with nurses in municipal primary care. Method: A qualitative literature review based on nine articles. Results: Older adults’ experiences of the encounter are influenced by their involvement in decision-making, the opportunity to build a relationship with the nurse, and being seen as a person. When older adults are given the opportunity to participate, receive information, and influence decisions, their sense of security and dignity is strengthened. Conversely, shortcomings in the relationship with the nurse, as well as in the approach, communication, and organizational conditions, can limit participation, which may lead to a sense of insecurity, reduced trust, and the feeling of not being seen. Method discussion: The method is discussed based on the quality criteria of credibility, confirmability, dependability, and transferability, with a focus on the study’s strengths and weaknesses. Results discussion: The findings are discussed in relation to previous research, theory, and ethical and societal perspectives. Conclusion: A good relationship with the nurse, characterized by participation, respect, responsiveness, and continuity, is crucial for creating trust and meaningful encounters. Communication and a person-centred approach are central, while shortcomings may negatively affect trust and the quality of care.
