The purpose of this study is to investigate what the teachers' experiences and perceptions are regarding the national tests in mathematics, grade 3. The study also aims to investigate whether teachers have a benefit and see a value in the national tests in their assessment of the student. Our combined study consists of both qualitative and quantitative data. In the study, 23 working teachers answered a survey and four teachers were interviewed about national tests in mathematics, grade 3. In the analysis of the collected empirical data, we have used the concept of beliefs and the theoretical grounding belief system, which makes it possible to depict the teachers' opinions and perceptions about the tests. The results showed that the national tests have varying purposes and that teachers therefore use the tests in different ways. There are also different opinions on whether the tests contribute to an equivalent assessment. On the other hand, the survey shows that the upcoming digitalization of the tests could contribute to strengthening the equivalent assessment.
