Background: Increasing age raises the risk of developing cognitive disease. With an extended lifespan, a drastic increase in cognitive disease incidence is predicted. Without pharmaceutical treatment, a person-centered approach stands as an indispensable method to enhance the quality of life. Reminiscence constitutes a person-centered care strategy that focuses on an individual's unique life history and memory to improve the quality of life for individuals with cognitive disease. Objective: The aim was to illuminate nurses' experiences of reminiscence with individuals having cognitive disease. Method: A general literature review based on nine qualitative scientific articles was conducted. Information retrieval was performed in three nursing databases. Articles found were assessed according to University of Kristianstad's review template for qualitative articles. The analysis was carried out following Friberg's (2017) five-step analysis model. Results: Nurses' experience of reminiscence resulted in three main categories; Change through Encounter, Strategies in Nursing Care and Experience of Challenges. Within these main categories, nine subcategories emerged. Discussion: The method was discussed based on Shenton's (2004) concept of quality, credibility, confirmability, dependability and transferability. The discussion of results is based on three findings: The need to understand life story, Balancing care and time and Validating feelings and experiences. These are discussed based on McCormack and McCance's (2010) model for person-centeredness and from a proximity ethical perspective.
