    Abstract

Parkinson's disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disorder. In Sweden there are 15 000-20 000 individuals affected by the disease.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of oral diseases in individuals with Parkinson's disease. The material for the literature review was gathered in the medical database PubMed. Keywords used for the data research were ”Parkinson’s disease”, “oral diseases”, “dry mouth”, ”gingivitis”, “caries” and “periodontitis”. The result was based on a compilation of eleven scientific papers that have been reviewed and analyzed; eight articles were controlled clinical studies. One article examined the oral health clinically and the self-perceived oral health. Two articles examined the self-perceived oral health whereas one had a control group.

The results showed that individuals with Parkinson's disease had more gingivitis and the prevalence of periodontal disease was significantly higher in Parkinson's disease than control groups. Untreated caries and lower salivary flow was more occurring in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

The conclusion of the review is that individuals with Parkinson's disease have a significantly higher incidence of poor oral health compared to individuals who did not have Parkinson's disease.
