Background: The emergency department is the health and medical care facility that is visited by people who consider themselves in urgent need of care. It is important that healthcare works when a person's health fails and it must be accessible to everyone. All patients have different needs for care, but care must still be provided on equal terms. In emergency care, the focus is mainly on diagnosis, treatment and being effective. This can cause the patient's emotional needs to be ignored. Purpose: The purpose was to describe patients' experiences while waiting to receive care in an emergency room. Method: The literature review was based on 12 qualitative scientific articles. The information search has taken place in databases within nursing. The analysis was performed according to Fribergs (2017) five step analysis. Results: The results showed that participants experienced a lack of communication and information from the healthcare staff. The participants also experienced a mental discomfort in the form of worry or anxiety in relation to the wait. Three main categories with seven subcategories were identified as presented in the results. Conclusion: When people feel that their health is in acute danger, they go to the emergency room. Once they arrive at the emergency department, there is often a long wait, which leads to mental strain. If the nurses work person-centered and communicate more with the patients, their experience of the stay in the emergency department can be improved.
