Abstract

Mental health problems is increasing amongst children and youths, both in society as a whole and in our schools. The purpose of this study is to research how personnel at school-age education centres experience working with mental health problems amongst pupils and the cooperation with the student health team. To facilitate our research we used the method of qualitative interviews with personnel at different school-age education centres. The interviews were conducted either in a physical meeting or via Zoom. In these interviews the informants gave us similar answers about their experiences of mental illness amongst pupils and how they work with those pupils together with the student health team. The interviews showed us a variation in answers when it comes to how the student health works with the students who are showing symptoms of mental health problems and how the school-age educare personnel are working with the phenomenon. The results of the analysis of the interviews have shown that the personnel at the school-age education centres are not provided with any in-service training concerning mental health problems, their knowledge of the subject being purely what they have gathered themselves. The support from student health has been vague and there has been nothing in the way of the development of action plans or cooperation. The interviews showed us that mental illness is a subject which is not discussed to any great extent amongst the teachers. Instead, they are primarily discussing neurodevelopmental disorders. The conclusion of this study shows that there is a need for in-service training concerning the subject of mental health problems, how it should be approached and that there is also a need for an immediate action plan as soon as mental health problems are discovered in a pupil.
