Abstract
Background: An intestinal stoma has a major impact on people's physical, psychological and social well-being. Nurses' responsibility is to promote people'swell-being and to provide the best care possible. Therefore, it is of great importance that they are well informed about how people with an intestinal stoma experience their new everyday life. Method: A general literature study of a qualitative approach based on 11 qualitative articles that were systematically searched in scientific databases: Cinahl Complete and Pubmed. The review of the articles was carried out using Kristianstad University´s review template (2016) for qualitative studies. The analysis process was carried out according to Friberg´s (2022) fivestep model. Results: It emerged that people with an intestinal stoma experience limitations in their daily life. Feelings of shame and fear of potential leaks were common experiences. Feelings of relief and freedom from previous intestinal problems and gratitude for life occurred. The importance of support from the people´s close environment and from healthcare was perceived to have a significant impact on the people´s well-being. Discussion: The quality of the study was based on Shenton´s (2004) credibility concepts: credibility, confirmability, dependability and transferability. Three findings were highlighted: Experiences of shame that lead to isolation, Gratitude increases management, To have an occupation creates meaning. The findings were discussed based on ethical aspects, societal perspective, the global goals and Antonovsky´s (2005) model KASAM.
