Abstract

The study is of a qualitative nature and aims to investigate how teachers in after-school centers describe differences between boys' and girls' physical activity at the after-school centers. The study's background is based on the deteriorating health status of children and young people who move significantly less than the prevailing recommendations. Previous research shows that boys and girls are less physically active at school and in their free time than boys are. In order to investigate how the situation is at after-school centers, we have conducted semi-structured interviews with teachers in after-school centers who gave their description of boys' and girls' physical activity at the after-school centers. The studio starts from the theoretical perspective of social constructivism and gender order. The results show that the teachers' description of boys' and girls' physical activity at the after-school center differs. Among other things, the boys are described as more physically active and, in addition, boys and girls prefer different types of physical activities. The structures made visible in previous research could also be seen at the after-school center. Finally, the study emphasizes the need to challenge and redefine traditional gender patterns within physical activity at after-school.
