Abstract

Background: Anyone can suffer from depressive symptoms. There are different degrees of severe depression that affect how seriously depressive symptoms appear. Depressive symptoms can include lack of interest, feelings of fatigue, hopelessness, or guilt. Depressive symptoms may occur due to various risk factors such as negative life events, external factors or heredity. Depressive symptoms can be prevented with physical activity. Aim: The aim was to describe experiences of physical activity among people with depressive symptoms. Method: Literature study based on 9 qualitative articles and 2 articles with mixed method where only the qualitative results were used. Articles were retrieved from databases Cinahl Complete and PsycINFO. Some articles were manually searched to get a complete result. Reviews were conducted by using the HKR review template for qualitative articles. The analysis model used was Friberg’s (2022) five- step model for compiling qualitative research. Results: The analysis resulted in 2 main categories: Impact on mental well-being and Effects of different types of physical activity, as well as 4 subcategories. Discussion: In the method discussion, Shenton’s (2004) concept of credibility was used, which includes credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability. The discussion of results is based on three findings; Physical activity is directly crucial for good mental health, individually adapted physical activity plays a role in the experience, and support improves the experience which is discussed in relation to the nurse’s core competencies.
