Abstract
Purpose and questions: The aim of the study is to research how seven physical education teachers at upper secondary school for students with intellectual disabilities create an accessible learning environment for students studying on the national program. Furthermore, we wanted to understand under what conditions the physical education teachers have to conduct their teaching and how this correlates with the student increased motivation and participation in class.Method: We have used a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews. In order to recruit seven physical education teachers for the study, we used a targeted selection. Two of the interviews were conducted physically at schools where the teachers work, while five of the interviews were conducted by digital meeting places. The interviews were transcribed and then analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results: The results show that all respondents believe that the creation of relationships, between teacher and student, is of great importance in achieving successful teaching in physical education. The student must also feel safe to join and participate in physical education. The respondents mention the importance of finding individual solutions in order for students to feel secure. You cannot treat all students the same, because each student is unique and therefore require different strategies to get them involved. It differs in terms of the conditions for accessible educational environment; group size, access to halls, outdoor environment, distance to the place of physical education and access to student assistants.
Common to all respondents is that there are student assistants present during transfers, changing situations and during physical education lessons. However, it differs in how many student assistants the physical education teachers have access to. There are also differences in the student assistant's commitment of being physically involved during lessons.
Conclusions: trusting relationships, individual solutions, safety, the role of the student assistant and the physical environment.
