Abstract

Background: The school has two missions, both to convey knowledge and to convey values. These tasks seem difficult to integrate, and the focus on the students achieving high grades can mean that the value-based work is overshadowed. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore teachers' perceptions of and experiences with value-based work in middle school at a school in Skåne. Methods: Individual semi-structured interviews with four middle school teachers. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The result is presented through the overarching theme Relationship building is central to the value-based work and the categories Creating inclusion, Anchoring values and Being a role model. Conclusion: The teachers talked about special value-based days but had more difficulty concretizing what value-based work means in practice and said that in the rest of the teaching it is more about an approach. Previous research shows that there is no consensus among teachers about what values-based work entails. Further research is therefore needed that sheds light on how value-based work can pervade all teaching. This is particularly important given the importance of creating an equal school and, by extension, creating good citizens.
