The purpose of this study is to examine how horseback riding in nature reserves is perceived by both riders and other visitors, with particular focus on safety, conflicts, trail wear, and awareness of regulations. The study was conducted as a case study of Stiby backe Nature Reserve in Sölvesborg municipality, Sweden, where riding is permitted on a designated path. A mixed-methods approach was applied. A survey was conducted with 25 riders and 32 other visitors, complemen-ted by two semi-structured interviews, one with a rider and one with a non-riding visitor. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the inter-views were examined through thematic analysis. The results show that the reserve holds high recreational value for both groups and that attitudes toward horseback riding are generally neutral to slightly positive. However, a majority of riders report having experienced conflicts or uncomfortable situations, primarily involving loose dogs, cyclists, and runners. Among other visitors some feelings of insecurity are expressed, mainly related to uncertainty about how to pass a horse safely. A significant lack of awareness regarding regulations and the designated bridle path is evident, particularly among non-riding visitors. The findings indicate that conflicts are primarily situational rather than value-based and are largely connected to unclear trail structure and insufficient information. The study suggests that improved signage, clearer spatial separation between user groups, and targeted information on how to manage encounters between horses and other visitors could contribute to reduced conflicts and strengthened coexistence within the nature reserve.
