Abstract

Background: Person-centred care includes all the needs of the whole person where sexuality and sexual health is an important part of achieving well-being. Nurses have an important role through their responsibility for the care of the elderly persons in nursing homes. In nursing homes the private sphere decreases, which can be an obstacle to sexual expressions for the residents. Sexuality is synonymous with tenderness, closeness and intimacy. Conditions for sexuality and sexual health throughout life changes and are affected by illness or loss of a partner, which nurses need to have knowledge of. Aim: This study aimed to describe nurses’ experience of facing elderly persons needs of sexuality and sexual health with in nursing homes. Methods: A general literature review with a qualitative approach was conducted with analysis and review of articles from the databases Cinahl Complete, PsycINFO and PubMed. Results: The results are based on nine scientific articles on nurses' experiences. The results are presented in three main categories which are Personal experiences, Nurses’ challenges and Uncomfortable and challenging experiences. The nurses experienced discomfort and had generally negative attitudes towards the sexuality of elderly persons. The need for education and leadership was raised, as well as various strategies for dealing with the occurrence of negative experiences. The care relations with the residents were affecting their feelings. Nurses’ feelings influenced the care relationships with the elderly persons in nursing homes. Discussion: This study's trustworthiness was assessed from the notions of credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability. The results were discussed on the basis of the nurse’s core competencies, three findings were highlighted. The findings consisted of Own experiences affect the attitudes, Coping mechanisms and The need for education.
