Abstract

Background: Nurses experience that there may be certain restrictions in the treatment of patients who have been victim of sexual abuse, which makes nurses uncomfortable to talk about it with the patient. The limitations may be due tovarious factors, such as the nurse's culture and upbringing and that they lacked training in communication about sexual health and illness. Aim: The purpose was to shed light on nurses' experiences of treating patients who have been sexually abused. Method: A general literature study based on ten scientific articles. The search was performed in three databases in nursing. Result: In the treatment of the patient, nurses may experience that various factor arise that can affect the meeting with the patient as well as the impact on their own wellbeing and that there is a lack of support and education about sexualabuse. Discussion: The results discussion is based on three findings; barriers in meeting the patient, the emotional response of the nurse and the lack of training. Conclusions that emerged were to establish a routine of asking questions, management strategies in the workplace in the form of debriefing and in-depthtraining in the subject.
