Abstract

Background: Approximately 90, 000 people die in Sweden every year, the majority of whom have been shown to need palliative care in various forms and extents. End-of-life care is a care offered to patients with the aim of reducing suffering and promoting the highest possible quality of life during the last period of life. The nurse has a central role in palliative care. In addition to conventional nursing task such as observing the patient’s symptoms, implementing treatment plans, and observing treatment effects, the nurse must also be an emotional support for both the patient and relatives. Aim: The aim was to describe the nurse’s experience of meeting patients at the end of life in inpatient care. Method: A general literature study based on 11 qualitative original articles searched in the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. The articles were analyzed using Friberg’s (2017) three-step analysis method. Results: The analysis resulted in two main categories and five subcategories. The main categories were the nurse’s emotional experiences and the nurse’s experiences of challenges at work. Conclusion: Understanding how the nurse experiences the meeting with the patient is important in order to be able to prevent ill health and vulnerability in the nurse, which can also lead to organizational improvements.
