Abstract

Background: Suicide is the biggest cause of death within the psychiatry. Suicide and suicide attempts are something that a nurse working in the psychiatry has to handle regularly. A patient who has commited suicide may affect the nurse with wearisome psychological issues. Purpose: The purpose was to through the collection and composing of literature emphasize the nurse's experience of caring for patients who have committed a suicide act. Method: This study was performed as a literature study that is based on 10 different research articles of both quantitative and qualitative studies. The articles chosen are analyzed for it to become the result in the literature review. Result: The nurse had an emotional experience that lasted long after a patient performed a suicide act. Management strategies could be used to help the nurse process and learn from the incident. Discussion: The result shows that a nurse may be affected both long term and short term when a patient has committed suicide act. The different categories show an insight in how a nurse’s mental health is affected during a longer period. The two categories along with the five subcategories are dependent on each other to be able to provide a full comprehension in how a nurse may be affected. Conclusion: The result showed that the nurses who treated patients that later on commit a suicide act are influenced negatively. With that result and reason a strategy has to be made to prevent a further mental illness.
