Abstract
Background: The nurse's area of responsibility is to lead the care of the patient. Despite the fact that urgent decisions are sometimes required in emergency healthcare, one must not ignore the fact that all decisions need to be justified and taken with an understanding of the individual patient's situation. The chosen theoretical frame of reference is Person-centred care, as described by McCormack and McCance.Purpose: The purpose is to describe the nurse's experiences of caring for patients with dementia in emergency care.
Method: A general literature study based on 12 qualitative scientific articles. The information search has taken place in databases within nursing. The articles that were found were reviewed according to HKR's review template for qualitative articles. The analysis was carried out according to Friberg's (2017) analysis model in five steps.
Results: In the analysis of the articles, two categories emerged: Resources (internal and external) and Emotional stress. These two overall areas could be divided into six subcategories: An environment that is not adapted to dementia, Lack of knowledge and training, Relatives as a resource, Lack of time and lack of staff, Feeling of failing communication, Stress and anxiety.
Discussion: The method discussion was discussed based on Shenton's (2004) four credibility concepts. The discussion of the results was based on three findings, these were: An environment that is not adapted to dementia, Lack of time and staff, Lack of knowledge and training. These are discussed based on Person-centred care (McCormack & McCance, 2017). They are also discussed from an ethical and societal perspective.
