Abstract

Background: Stress is a physical reaction caused by several processors when a potential threat is perceived. One form of stress is work-related stress, which occurs, among other places, in emergency departments. The stress can lead to a lack of patient safety and impaired ability to solve problems, which in turn can prevent nurses from being able to help patients at an early stage. Aim: The aim was to illustrate nurses' experiences of work-related stress in emergency departments. Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach. Article searches were performed in three different databases where articles were selected for review. The results that answered the purpose of the study were analyzed according to Friberg's (2022b) five-step model. Results: The results were presented in three main categories; The stressors of the emergency department, The effects of stress and Nurses' stress management. Followed by eight subcategories; Too many nursing tasks in relation to worktime, Lack of resources increases the workload, Encountering unexpected or traumatic events, Impact on nurses' ability to maintain a good quality of care, Impact on nurses' physical and mental health, Impact on nurses' family life, The need to take a break and talk about the stress and Different lifestyle choices to cope with the stress. Discussion: The quality was assessed using Shenton's (2004) four quality concept; credibility, confirmability, dependability and transferability. The following findings were discussed; Nurses have experience that stress affects the quality of the care they provide, Too many tasks and too high patient flow cause stress among nurses, Nurses feel that a lack of resources causes work-related stress.
