Purpose: Nurses working in impatient care may find the high workload to be a source of stress. This could be attributed to the increasing demand for work tasks and a decrease in available resources. Method: Based on a literature study, conducted using the Kristianstad University template for qualitative studies (Blomqvist et al., 2016), this research analysed eleven qualitative scientific articles gathered from Cinahl Complete and Pubmed. The analysis followed Friberg’s four-step method. Results: The study’s result yielded five categories: compromised patient safety, stress of conscience, collegial support, and nurse’s own health. Discussion: The discussion focused on four qualitative concepts: credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability as outlined by Shenton (2004). The discussion of the result revolved around two main findings: compromised patient safety and the impact on nurse’s health. These findings were explored in relation to McCormack and McCance’s (2010) model of personcentered care. Conclusion: The study revealed that nurses experienced an unhealthy work environment due to high workload, leading to unreasonable working conditions that had a negative impact on both the nurses’ work and the care patients receive.
