Background: Adequate postoperative pain relief is included in human rights and adequate pain relief provides the prerequisite for reduced risk of complications. In Sweden, an average of 800,000 surgeries are performed annually, which means that nurses handle many patients with postoperative pain. How can the nurse's experience be used to reduce the risk of unnecessary suffering for the patient? Aim: The aim was to describe nurses 'experiences of assessing and relieving patients' postoperative pain in inpatient care. Method: The literature study is based on 10 qualitative articles. The article searches have been done through databases focused on nursing and medicine. The articles were reviewed with the help of Kristianstad University's review template for qualitative articles. Friberg's (2017) five-step model was used for analysis. Results: The results show that nurses' experience is that postoperative pain assessment and relief is dependent on the nurse's knowledge, security in the professional role and ability to create a relationship with the patient. The areas of sufficient time for professional practice and clear guidelines for how assessment should take place are also important for achieving adequate postoperative pain relief. Discussion: Method discussion was conducted with Shenton's (2004) credibility concepts reliability, verifiability, reliability and transferability. For the discussion of results, the authors selected five key findings which were then discussed on the basis of Travelbee's (1971) nursing theory and from a societal and ethical perspective.
