Abstract

Background: Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric illness that includes a disturbed body image that affects 1.2 percent of women and 0.29 percent of men in Sweden. Aim: The aim was to shed light on nurses' experiences of treating people with anorexia nervosa in inpatient care. Method: A literature study based on nine qualitative articles from the databases Cinahl Complete and PsycInfo. The articles were reviewed based on HKR's review template for qualitative studies. Friberg's four-step model was used in the analysis. Results: The experiences of caring for people with anorexia nervosa resulted in the following three themes: authority and personal treatment, caring for the person and not the illness, creating trust and a trusting relationship. Discussion: Shenton's credibility concept was used in the method discussion to assess the quality of this literature study. The findings that were highlighted in the results discussion are following: the nurse about establishing an authoritarian role, the nurse about separating the person from the illness, and the nurse's individual treatment. The findings were discussed based on, among other things, ethical viewpoints, societal perspectives, and nursing theories. Conclusion: The literature study has shown that nurses' experiences of caring for people with anorexia nervosa is that a clear leadership role is needed, and that nurses should be able to work person-centered by making a difference between the person and the illness.
