Abstract

Background: Dementia is described as a deterioration of cognitive functions caused by damage to the brain. Dementia is a progressive disease that is divided into three stages depending on the symptoms and the extent of the progress of the disease. There are nursing homes for people with dementia where people have the opportunity to receive care, support and a better life. By describing nurses' experience of caring for people with dementia, it can increase the understanding and knowledge of nurses and provide an insight into how people with dementia should be cared for. Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for people with dementia in nursing homes. Method: A general literature review was conducted based on nine qualitative articles that were searched in three different databases. HKR's review template was used for the article review and then the analysis process was made based on Friberg's (2017) five-step model. Results: Nurses 'experiences of caring for people with dementia resulted in two main categories: Nurses' responsibilities in care and Obstacles in care. The first main category contained four subcategories: Person-centered approach, Maintaining functions, Documentation and assessment and Risk assessments and safety measures. The second main category consisted of three subcategories: Challenges with medication and behaviors, Communication difficulties and Lack of time. Discussion: The method was discussed based on Shenton's (2004) four quality concepts of trustworthiness. The results were discussed based on three findings: Preserve functions, Communication skills and The importance of time. These three findings were discussed based on McCormack & McCance's (2016) model of person-centering. Some of the findings were also discussed based on ethical concepts, proximity ethics, societal perspectives and the global goals.
