Abstract

Background: The nurse's profession is nursing care and is based on scientific knowledge and patient-centered work. A prerequisite for being able to offer good nursing is knowledge in medical science, behavioral science and sustainable development. Obesity is a growing public health problem and is caused when calorie intake exceeds calorie burn. Difficulties with mobilization and personal hygiene can occur in the nursing work of people with obesity. Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for people with obesity. Method: The method used is a literature review with a qualitative approach. The included articles have been searched in the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. Results: The results come from nine scientific articles that all describe the nurses' experiences of caring for people with obesity. The main categories describe a different work environment as well as communication and treatment. The result has five subcategories: An increased workload, a complex need for care, fears of an occupational injury, nurses' different attitudes and safeguarding the relationship. Discussion: The credibility of the literature review has been assessed on the basis of the quality concepts reliability, verifiability, confirmability and transferability. Strengths and weaknesses of the method have been discussed. In the discussion of results, three main findings have been discussed, these were: what complex care needs nurses are challenged by, the relationship between the nurse and the person with obesity and nurses' experiences of colleagues' negative attitudes towards people with obesity. Buber's interaction theory, Husserl's lifeworld, and ethical principles have been discussed.
