Background: Every third patient who enters a health center in Sweden suffers from mental illness. Mental illness is an increasing public health problem and is behind 40% of all sick leave in Sweden. Nurses at the health center are usually the first the patient meets and thus they have a responsibility in the meeting through health promotion work, support and making the patient involved in their own care. Aim: The aim was to highlight nurses' experiences of meeting adults with mental illness at the health centre. Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach. A systematic article search was made in databases with a focus on nursing care. Results: Nurses' experiences of the meeting with adults with mental illness resulted in two main categories: Challenges in the detection of mental illness & Areas that affect nurses in the meeting, with three subcategories each. Discussion: The strengths and weaknesses of the literature study are discussed in the method discussion based on Shenton's (2004) credibility concepts. In the results discussion, three central findings from the results of the literature study are highlighted, which are discussed based on Buchanan-Barker & Barker's tidal model (2008). One of the findings is also linked to virtue ethics. Conclusion: The literature study shows the nurse's experience of the meeting with adults with mental illness where the results showed some negative aspects of the meeting. This affected the experience with a desire for more time with the patient, because it lays the foundation for the best conditions.
