Background: To be able to provide good care for end of life patients, it’s important for nurses to be comfortable in meeting with patients and relatives and have strategies to handle feelings of emotional distress in a professional way. Aim: The aim was to explore nurses' experiences of caring for patients at the end of life in inpatient care. Method: A literature review based on 12 qualitative studies from the databases Cinahl and PubMed using HKR:s review template for qualitative studies. Results: The nurses' experiences were divided into two main categories; emotional challenges and gratification from easing suffering and eight subcategories; distance to death, feelings of sadness and grief, feelings of worrying and fear, a painful caring, feelings of insecurity, feeling uncomfortable, power imbalance and meaningfulness. Discussion: The authors discussed the work by using the four credibility concepts by Shenton (2004) which was credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability. The result discussion was based on the categories distance to death, feelings of sadness and grief, feelings of insecurity and power imbalance.
